Transcript
- Panel 1
Roy: We're running out of light from the doorway…
Durkon: Dinnae worry, lad. I can see tha end o' tha tunnel comin' up soon.
Roy: Good, but I'd prefer not to rely on your Darkvision. V?
- Panel 2
Vaarsuvius: Light.
Roy: Anything?
Haley: Looks clear.
- Panel 3
The tunnel leads into a large, cavernous space.
Roy: See? I told you those dungeons were too close together for them to each be their own dungeon.
Belkar: Yeah, yeah. You're a very clever boy.
Haley: Does anyone see Elan?
- Panel 4
Elan: I'm over here! You should follow me!
Elan: Into this cave!
Elan: This cave over here!
- Panel 5
Haley: Not, uh…not exactly the most cunningly crafted trap, huh?
Roy: I imagine the raw materials they're using are affecting the quality of the finished product.
- Panel 6
Roy (thinking): But that's no excuse for us to let our guard down.
Roy (thinking): For example, I would bet you ten gold pieces this hole is going to slam shut the moment we're inside.
Haley (thinking): I'll let you know if I take that bet after I search for traps.
- Panel 7
Haley (thinking): Nothing…no magic, no mechanics. Looks safe.
Haley (thinking): But not ten-gold-pieces safe. Stay here, I'll sneak in and see if I can find Elan.
Roy (thinking): Good idea.
- Panel 8
Minrah (thinking): So…we walk into the ambush, but it's OK because we do it carefully?
Vaarsuvius (thinking): The enemies who feel they must engage in subterfuge have historically been the ones against whom our efforts have been most successful.
Belkar (thinking): The ones you need to watch out for are usually the ones you don't need to watch out for.
D&D Context
- Light is a cantrip (0-level arcane spell) which creates illumination in a 20-foot radius (with dim illumination over twice that area). Despite it being a very common spell, this is the second time in the comic that V uses it.
- Darkvision is a special ability of several races, including dwarves. In D&D 3.5, it is an ability to see in monochrome in the absence of light. In previous editions, it was called "infravision" and allowed visibility into the infrared spectrum. D&D 3.5 revised that to avoid the complexities of seeing heat versus just seeing in the dark, doing away with any need to explain how that happens.
Trivia
- This is the first appearance of Mimi, a mimic and another of Serini's allies, but her appearance in the strip would not be apparent until a page later.
