The five Snarl Gates created by the Order of the Scribble contained the god-killing abomination Snarl. The gates were created by using both epic arcane and divine magic which (as hinted by Redcloak) could take as long as decades to research, making it nearly impossible to recreate if destroyed.
History
A paladin from Azure City, Soon Kim, was on a diplomatic mission to the Elven Lands when his wife Mijung was tragically killed by the Snarl lashing out through a rift that had opened in its planar prison. Shortly afterwards he met Lirian, an elven druid who was investigating the disappearance of some animals from her forest, and the two concluded that the same rift was behind it and set out to learn more about the rifts, including how to seal them. They traveled around the world and were joined by Serini Toormuck, a halfling rogue, Kraagor, a dwarven barbarian, Girard Draketooth, a human sorcerer and ranger, and Dorukan, a human wizard. Finding five rifts all over the world, the group discovered that the rifts could not be fully closed, but they were able to develop a magical means to seal them, with Kraagor tragically being killed while sealing the final rift. After their adventure had concluded, Lirian and Dorukan successfully researched a method to reinforce reality around the rifts, creating the five Gates. The group then had an argument that almost led to bloodshed, until Serini made a compromise of them defending their own respective gates with their own means with no communication or interference (though she did not stand by her own proposal, and asked her friends for help protecting her gate, receiving aid from all but Soon).[2]
The Dark One intends to blackmail the gods themselves by threatening to release the Snarl with the Gates to barter a better life for the Goblinoid people, using the Bearer of the Crimson Mantle, Redcloak, to manipulate Xykon into locating the Gate in order to transport it to the Dark One.
Since then, 4 of the gates has been destroyed through various means, only Kraagor's Gate remains which is currently being searched for by Team Evil.
